Three Misconceptions of the 3D Animation Industry

by the 3D Animation Department at Laurus College

The Digital Arts and Computer Animation Program at Laurus College is designed to teach students the essential skills needed in order to find a job in the competitive 3D Animation Industry.

What is the Digital Arts and Computer Animation program all about?

3D Animation can best be described as the application of storytelling, science, mathematics, and art all combined into one field. The mathematics and science drive the software used to create 3D objects and characters. The art dictates the creative process and explains why we do things the way we do. And, the ultimate goal of 3D Animation is to tell a story using what you create.

The 3D Animation Industry not only includes Video Games and Cartoons, but also Movie Films, Television Shows, and Commercial Advertisements.

Now we will explain the truth behind “Three Misconceptions of the 3D Animation Industry” that you may not have previously known.

Misconception #1

“You only need to learn and specialize in one skill in order to start a career in the Animation Industry.”

Turns out you will have a very tough time finding employment by only knowing how to model a character in 3D. Most jobs in this field require prospects to have the ability to do two or more things. For example, a company might look to fulfill a “3D Modeler and Shading Artist” position compared to only a “3D Animator.”

In the Digital Arts & Computer Animation Program at Laurus College, students gain a broad knowledge of the 3D Animation Industry by learning Modeling, Texturing, Rendering, Color Theory, Animating, and Character Design.

Misconception #2

“You can completely finish working on a project the night before it’s due.”

3D Animation is not as fast of a process as most people imagine it to be. This career field is very hands-on and requires the understanding of how to do something and being able to apply that to your projects and work. This involves staying current with software, techniques, and practicing the skills learned, even on your own free time. If you procrastinate and don’t spend the time necessary to provide quality work, then your project will not be complete.

Digital Arts & Computer Animation students dedicate extra time out of their day towards projects and assignments, which benefits them as they continue to grow and learn throughout the program.

Misconception #3

“All you need is a resume to get a job in the 3D Animation industry.”

Finding a job in this industry is unique because it requires something called a Demo Reel, in addition to a solid resume and cover letter. A Demo Reel is a short video that displays the work you have done that pertains to the job you are applying for. If you are applying for a “3D Generalist” position, then you would want to show work that involves Modeling, Shading, Animation, Rigging, and Compositing.

An Associate Degree from Laurus College in Digital Arts & Computer Animation may also assist you in your job search and help your application to stand apart from the rest.
