Today, there are very few websites that are designed to stay the same and never receive an update. These static sites are growing increasingly rare due to new software, techniques, and requirements that are being released so frequently that it’s hard to keep up. A website’s back-end is responsible for making sure that the functionality works while constantly adjusting to those new types of releases.

We provided an overview below of some “need-to-know” items when working on the back-end to ensure that your website stays current and functional:

Domain Name

This is the website’s address on the internet. A user types this name into their search bar and finds the results linking to your site. Choosing the right domain name can dramatically impact traffic and the overall success of your website.

Hosting Selection

The website host is where your site is actually located and stored. Somewhere on a server is the set of files that are pulled up whenever a user arrives at your domain name. You want to select a host that is both reliable and stable to ensure that your website doesn’t crash or experience slow loading times.

Online Databases

Databases allow the ability to store, sort, search through, and display large amounts of information. Online databases bring this technology seamlessly to the internet.

When you look at the address bar of your browser (Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, or Firefox) check to see if the site you are on has a Security Certificate (https). It is important to have the highest levels of security if you are capturing credit cards and personal data on your website.
Google did hint that they may start ranking websites with security certificates higher in search results, which makes it even more important to have this done for your website.

In the final part of this series, we will wrap up the remaining information on how the back-end development of a site connects with the front-end to make fully functional websites.
